Gundog, Are They Your Perfect Match

Dog groups can help anyone to start to focus their search for the perfect puppy. As an approved assured breeder with The Kennel Club I regularly like to use the resources within The Kennel Club website to gather information to share with any potential puppy owner who seeks my support.

Today I am sharing more information about Gundogs as one of the 7 dog groups within the UK. The reason I start with this group is simply because both my higher energy dogs came from a mix of this group and both show more of their Gundog nature than their poodle side which is the utility dog group. Honey is a Miniature Labradoodle and Rosie is a Cockerpoo and while Rosie has settled down considerably in her 6th year, Honey who is also coming up 6 years likes to keep on the move especially with the ball in her mouth on the off chance you may choose to throw it for her.

Gundogs - The great thing about a Gundog is the fact that they have been bred to work closely alongside humans so it is important to them to please their human, which normally means they are loyal, obedient companions. They are great all round family dogs as all their humans are important to them, I can say that Rosie my Cockerpoo totally adores children and likes nothing more than a cuddle from my 18 month old nephew. Rosie seems to understand that she needs to be calm around children and keeps quite still so the children can stroke her while her tail wags happily sweeping across the floor as she sits.

As Gundogs have developed their characteristics alongside humans they are great to train and take instruction well from an early age. They are quite intelligent which further helps with training however if their minds are not engaged they can get frustrated, this can be when chewing damage can be caused.

As I have mentioned over my previous blogs when I took Rosie and Honey on as puppies from other owners it was a very difficult first year as they had a very high energy level. However having 2 puppies together will always be more difficult as they can focus on each other, so you need to work harder to build the canine human bond. If you do have the time to train, exercise and drain their mental energy they are brilliant for either families or as a loyal one to one companion.

So which dog breeds sits within the dog group Gundog: Retrievers, Spaniels, Setters, Pointers are some of the main breed types but you can find a full breed list at http://www.thekennelclub.org.uk/ser...
